Ankle arthroscopy treats chronic ankle instability, ankle impingement (anterior or posterior), osteochondral defects (cartilage damage), loose bodies, ankle arthritis, synovitis, and Achilles tendon conditions. It is commonly used in athletes with persistent ankle pain after injury.
Ankle impingement is pain caused by bony spurs or soft tissue getting pinched inside the ankle joint during movement, especially during activities that involve bending the ankle. Arthroscopic surgery removes the offending bone spurs or tissue through small incisions, providing immediate relief and restoring full pain-free movement.
If an ankle sprain does not heal after 3-6 months of physiotherapy and causes instability or persistent pain, ankle arthroscopy allows the surgeon to assess and repair the damaged ligaments, remove scar tissue, and address any associated cartilage damage. Ligament reconstruction (Brostrom procedure) can also be performed arthroscopically.
For most ankle arthroscopy procedures, patients are non-weight-bearing for 1-2 weeks followed by gradual rehabilitation. Return to normal walking takes 4-6 weeks. Return to sports and high-demand activities takes 2-4 months with guided physiotherapy.
Flat foot deformity itself is not treated arthroscopically, but associated joint pain, arthritis, and ligament conditions in patients with flat feet can be managed arthroscopically. Complex flat foot reconstruction usually involves additional procedures beyond arthroscopy.
